other notes: i'm cringe? anyway, i had this idea, and had to write it no matter what. it's based off this pann post, so i will just say this work is extremely niche and for me. i read that post, and was like, obviously the worst case scenario is a? but the comments all said different. anyways, i miss having friends and others read my writing, so i'm posting it. i hope you all like it? i don't take ownership for any typos, grammarly was being strange all day.

p.s: i ranked them from least worrying to most worrying and then realized it was literally just backwards. but i'm right. anyways, enjoy! (and leave a comment please, i miss those.) also, a lot of random kpop idols are in this.

    • D - A woman that your boyfriend liked before and who's a young and rich friend who lives in his district although she never liked him.

      • Your boyfriend would even pick her up sometimes if he sees her in his district.

Huening Kai wonders how long this has been going on under his nose. Judging from Soobin’s amused yet annoyed expression, he starts to gauge that it’s longer than he thinks.

Soobin had asked, “Do you mind picking up someone on our way back?”

Kai asked in return, “Depends who it is.” It was simply a jest, and Kai expected Soobin to laugh in return. Instead, Soobin scrunched up his nose and tapped his thumb against the screen of his phone. Kai looked at him with an expression quickly fading from joking to confusion. “What’s wrong? You know I don’t mind.”

Soobin snorted as he finished typing a reply to whoever he was messaging, then placed his phone face down. “Whatever, just don’t act crazy about it.”

So Kai wondered, what on earth could make him act crazy? Maybe he should have picked up on a hint when Soobin asks him to sit in the backseat when he usually rides on the passengers' side. But the music that was playing was good, and Soobin and Kai never fell into silence when they were talking, so he did not linger on it.

It hit him at once when Soobin looked out the window in the middle of the conversation, and his smile shifted, only a bit. (Of course, since Kai is Soobin’s best friend, he catches it.)

Kai turned his head, and couldn’t even control his mouth falling open in a dramatic fashion.

Choi Yeonjun waves as she walks closer to the car, looking as chic as ever in her black blazer and jeans. She had dyed her hair auburn recently, Kai had seen on Instagram. He was one of her thousands of followers after all.

And as she opens the car door and reaches a hand to ruffle Soobin’s hair with a lot of familiarity, saying “Choi Soobin!” in an excited tone, he was sure Soobin was just a follower as well. The way Yeonjun holds Soobin’s chin in her hand and smiled at him as he explained that it was fine that she asked last minute, did not scream follower.

It screamed ‘more than strangers, maybe even friends, lovers maybe, oh is this why Soobin won’t date???’

    • C - A pretty and popular woman who is interested in your boyfriend.

      • She doesn't seem to be your boyfriend's type but she's really pretty and cute so if you were a man, you would accept her.

So, to start, Yerim is not officially dating Yeonjun.

It’s one of those things that seemed like it should be assumed though. In typical high school fashion, she was the cheerleading captain, and he was the star jock. Something out of books and movies. Yeonjun and Yerim would see each other in the halls, say hello to each other in flirty (maybe) ways, would hang out in the same group after home games at dinners and parties. Yeonjun would ask her to prom, she’d say yes, and they’d be the pair that everyone was jealous of the entire night.

She had imagined it quite a bit.

There’s a problem though, because when is there not?

The problem is looking at her now, standing at five foot seven, smiling with wide eyes. “Sorry to bother you, but,” the problem says. “you left this in chemistry!’ Yerim gives a fake smile (trying to hide that it’s fake) as she takes the notebook in her hand.

“Oh, you’re so sweet, thank you!”

Choi Soobin waves a hand, saying “Oh, it’s totally not a problem! See you tomorrow!”

Yerim repeats the words back, but Soobin is already walking away, looking down at her phone.

Choi Soobin transferred to their school about five months ago. She was sweet, gorgeous, tall; Yerim’s pretty sure she’s a part of the AV club or the school radio. The history teachers like her, her classmates like her, hell, even Yerim can’t hate her. (But she wants to, she wishes.)

Everyone likes her, Yerim knows. Including Yeonjun.

Yerim felt as if she had known Yeonjun’s type for a long time, maybe since middle school. Someone like Yerim or Yena, maybe even Yeji.

Choi Soobin did not fit that. She was just about the same height as Yeonjun, she wore lots of black cardigans and blue sweaters, and she always lingered after class to talk with teachers. In the scheme of high school narratives, they didn’t fit.

    But Yerim knows.

She’s seen the way Yeonjun waits for Soobin to walk into the class. The way he messes with her (in good nature) when she’s sitting alone outside at lunch. (By choice. Soobin can sit anywhere she wants, and everyone would let her.) She’s heard this once by chance, a quick moment, but something anyway.

She was trying to find a specific book in the library, for history, and heard them.

“You’re a mystery to me, Soobin.”

    “Hmm?”

“I don’t know,” there’s a shift against a wooden table. “You’re just interesting.” A moment of silence. “I’ve never met anyone like you.”

There’s an amused sound of someone fake vomiting. “That was cheesy as shit.”

    “Hopefully it works?”

Yerim had thought about that on the ride home. As she gets ready for bed, she thinks for a bit.

She comes to this conclusion: high school isn’t a film, and Yeonjun wants to take Soobin to prom.”

    • B - A fox-like female friend with average looks but she has a lot of aegyo and who's been friends with your boyfriend for over 10 years.

      • Like your boyfriend says, he views her as a man and she just always had a lot of male friends. But she's charming even for a fellow woman and she also acts like a fox.

Beomgyu shouldn’t be mad, she really shouldn’t.

Soobin had told her time and time again, he and Yeonjun aren’t like that. And to be fair, Beomgyu has only asked this in a joking manner, in her attempts at humor. She hasn’t confessed to Soobin or anything crazy either; Beomgyu’s not even waiting for a response either.

When she first got to know him after making Taehyun introduce them (they all shared the same horror literature class, and she had liked Soobin’s face), she was sure she would confess.

Possibility of Soobin taking her on a date: High chance.

That was a year ago. Beomgyu had been over the moon, much to Taehyun’s teasing. She felt a little lovestruck, but that was fine. Then, four months ago, she met Choi Yeonjun.

It had been at Soobin’s birthday dinner, and Beomgyu had dressed comfortably but girlishly, pretty. She went together with Taehyun and another of Soobin’s friends, Changmin. There was an exciting buzz as they walked into the room, people greeting them happily. Soobin hugged them all, and Beomgyu’s smile made her cheeks hurt.

Then, as she starts getting comfortable, the door swings open again, and Choi Yeonjun walks in with all her glory. Her hair is black, long, and healthy. Her eyes are covered in glitter and jewels, her lips a bright red, and Beomgyu knows she’s the most stunning in the room. Yeonjuns’ holding a bottle of champagne, pointing a finger across the room until her painted white nail (the color matches her sweater nicely), ends up on Soobin.

    “Come here!”

And Soobin jumps up and runs to her. Yeonjun wraps her arms around his shoulder, Soobin lifting her up, off the ground just a bit. She hits his shoulder in a joking matter, and Beomgyu watches and feels a bit upset.

Beomgyu gets a bit more drunk than usual and clings onto Taehyun as if she needs him to stand.

Possibility of Soobin taking her on a date: Lower chance, but still high.

A few weeks after that, Beomgyu casually asked what everyone was planning to do over Christmas over a study session. Huening Kai said travel, Taehyun said visiting family. She looked at Soobin with eager eyes and ears, even when Taehyun nudged her foot in teasing.

“Oh,” Soobin tilts his head, considering. “Probably with Yeonjun noona?”

Beomgyu felt her smile freeze on her face and lets out an “Oh!” slip out before she could form a proper response.

Taehyun had calmly explained to her that night, seeing as she was visibly upset, that Soobin and Yeonjun have a Christmas tradition. They’ve done that for years according to Taehyun. ‘Soobin isn’t even into Yeonjun like that.’

Unfortunately for everyone, Beomgyu doesn’t see the point in spending Christmas with someone you don’t love. So she kicks Taehyun out and turns up her sad girl playlist as loud as she can.

Possibility of Soobin taking her on a date: Fucking low. No chance.

    • A - An ex-girlfriend who truly loved your boyfriend, they almost got along on everything during their long-term relationship so she still has a lingering feeling about your boyfriend

      • She would sometimes get drunk and call your boyfriend even now.

    Wooyoung knows.

He’s been Yeonjun’s friend for a long time after all. For all of Yeonjun’s loud actions and confident personality, there are always moments of tenderness in between. And when those moments happen, he's so vulnerable, Wooyoung needs to look away. Wooyoung isn’t sure Yeonjun knows how easy he is to read, especially when it comes to this.

    Like for example, right now.

They’re sitting at a get-together, music low, lights warm and comforting. There’s a girl across the room who’s been making eyes at Yeonjun the whole night, Yeonjun kind enough to be nice to her in return. But Wooyoung knows Yeonjun isn’t into it, and can tell from how Yeonjun laughs and throws his head back and shuts his eyes.

When Wooyoung asks, Yeonjun says his head is buzzing.

A little bit later, the girl who was eyeing Yeonjun comes up to Wooyoung and says in a low voice “Do you know where Yeonjun went?”

“Oh,” Wooyoung says. “He needed a minute, says his head was hurting. Let me go look for him.”

Wooyoung excuses himself and walks out of the apartment and down the stairs, out of the building. He starts walking in one direction and stops when he hears Yeonjun’s laugh. It’s not the loud kind, this one was quieter, more open. Wooyoung presses himself into the wall and he listens.

“You sure you can handle that though?”

    A beat.

“Yeah I believe you…why are you whining, I do.”

    Another moment.

“Yeah,” Yeonjun says in a tone that Wooyoung isn’t sure what words to use to describe it. “I want to see you too.”

    “You know I do, Soobin.”

Yeonjun and Soobin were always a mystery to Wooyoung, even in the open like this. They had broken up a year ago, Wooyoung recalls, and from what he knows, it wasn’t out of animosity. Yeonjun still has a picture of Soobin on his wall at home. Yeonjun didn’t talk about her much after that, but he’s Wooyoung’s best friend.

Wooyoung knows the subtle tells. He knows how much Yeonjun misses her, longs for her as well. Like an open wound, Yeonjun refuses to close it, wrap it with a bandaid and let it heal. Wooyoung thinks he’ll bleed for Soobin for a long time.

    “I miss you.”

Silence, then a small chuckle, full of affection.

“I’ll check on you tomorrow. Drink a lot of water, okay? You know how your head hurts after soju.”

This silence is longer. Wooyoung shuts his eyes for a second.

    “I love you.”

Wooyoung thinks of the girl upstairs for a moment. Then he thinks of the necklace Yeonjun stopped wearing for a while, but recently started wearing it again. It was a bright crystal, it looked like a snowflake.

All Wooyoung can think is ‘Dude.’

Even when Yeonjun walks around the corner, not surprised to see Wooyoung there, all he can muster out is. “Dude.’

Yeonjun laughs lightly, he shrugs, not saying a word.

It starts to snow by the time they head back in. It is the beginning of December after all.

omg i love this concept and i love how the rule63 switched around so at times yeonj was the girl and other times soob was the girl....i also REALLY love how ambiguous their relationship looks to outsiders. i really enjoyed being limited to only what the other characters know, being only able to evaluate what those characters view as important....this is so creative and well done, imo. i think my favorite vignette is C, esp bc that last line HITS SO MUCH. smth about how matter of fact it is and how it calls back to the opening i do love a circular story and a chekovs gun type story. B is also good tew me becausee of the throughline of the "possibility of soobin taking her on a date" line because i also love repetitions with slight changes reflecting the realizations of the character....overall this was rly good i enjoyed the read ^_^ thank u for sharing <3
