this post is mainly about alicent hightower and the fandom from what i've seen on twitter. also i am team rhaenyra and alicent and alicent's happiness. i apologize for the typos, i wrote this on my notes app a little while back.
euphoria season 2 really showed me this but damn if you were to knock on certain people’s heads, there would be a very loud and long ECHO!!! I SWEAR TO GOD!!!
i feel like even if i wasn’t a lesbian, i would not view alicent’s character the way the majority are. i’m sorry but to think that a fourteen (14!!!) year old girl has been plotting to take the throne since birth is so insane. literally the character tells of alicent biting her nails and skin until she bleeds was there since episode 1? and even without then, have people never heard of complex characters and characterization?
for example, otto hightower (yuck) asking alicent why she’s destroying herself when he sees her bloody hands, before instantly pushing her to do something else. she never responds happily or cunning to that, rather she becomes stone faced and annoyed. she walked in, holding back her tears because her dad was not going to ask how she was actually feeling. he does not care!
alicent being seen as this evil, back-stabbing person is actually insane to me. there's nothing more she wants to literally not be there. people react to her when viserys says he will marry her as her being excited to hear him say her but like ?? clearly the same show was not being watched. she was so obviously anxious because she was hoping he would NOT pick her!!!??
don’t even get me started on how people paint her as this crazed heterosexual revenge evil queen. can we all be serious for a moment? i think it’s because a lot of people don’t read books and now we all have to suffer. it’s really a disservice to alicent’s character to take everything the shows gives the audience at face value, and refuse to listen to explanations and other perspectives that the actresses themselves give?!!/!
like:
- “she planned to take the throne and have the heir.” um…no? alicent was, i will say once again, 14. it's insane how people ignore this because they are so blinded by the books and preconceived ideas they had about alicent, from an inaccurate fictional history book.
- people said she poisoned that maid to kill her. director had to come out and basically say “wtf are you guys talking about, she did not poison her.”
- “she defended her awful son!πΉ” i need you all to rewatch that episode again. i didn’t watch it in full yet (by the time of originally writing this, i had not), and even i saw how she literally disowned him. “you are no son of mine,” = defense. right...
and some could be like “well why was she so irritated with rhaenyra at the start??” i mean if you guys used context clues and read the narrative it’s like pretty clear.
- repressed lesbianism and confusion, plus her wish to live her own life that her father was manipulating her against.
i can’t. i hate when this happens with female characters and the fandom just makes them the VILLIAN!! that's what happened with edelgard too, literally the same. and i will say what i said then again;
if alicent was a male character, she would be woobiefied and favored!!! but because she’s a woman, she is literally public enemy number one.
[what have I done but what was expected of me? forever upholding the Kingdom, the family, the law. while you flout all to do as you please. where is duty, where is sacrifice? trampled under your pretty foot again. And now you take my son's eye, and to even that you feel entitled.
now they see you as you are.]
on a lighter note, i am also trying to put together alicent's and rhaenyra's natal charts. so far i have these;
alicent; cancer sun and mars (mars in 11th house), mercury could be cancer as well in the 4th house or 7th house. virgo/10h venus?
rhaenyra; taurus sun, aries mars and mercury, mercury 8th house, capricorn or aquarius venus.
anyways, that's all for now! thanks for coming.
